Brett Rutherford was named Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation at Tallahassee State College on May 15th, 2026 and will officially begin his role on July 1, 2026.

A two-time graduate of Florida State University with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Media & Communication Studies, Rutherford returns to Tallahassee after serving as Assistant Athletic Director for External Operations at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

At Wake Tech, Rutherford oversaw athletic communications, game operations, and multimedia content while serving as the sport administrator for the women’s soccer, men’s basketball, and baseball programs. He also worked alongside the Athletic Director on fundraising efforts, coaching hires, and business operations, helping support the continued growth of the Eagles athletic department.

This marks a return to TSC for Rutherford, who previously served in multiple roles within the athletics department from 2021-23. During the 2022-23 academic year, he served as Assistant for Athletics and Communication, managing athletic communications, media relations, and game operations while assisting with business operations and fundraising initiatives.

Prior to that role, Rutherford served as Lead Broadcaster and Sports Information Assistant during the 2021-22 season, broadcasting and producing livestream coverage for home athletic events while creating content for the athletics website and social media channels.

In addition to his collegiate athletics experience, Rutherford has an extensive background in broadcasting and media. He served as Sports Director at WVFS Tallahassee from 2018-20, covering Florida State University athletics and hosting the weekly sports talk show Tomahawk Talk. He also worked as a reporter for WFSU Public Media, covering local business developments, sports, and state and local politics.

Rutherford has also contributed in digital media as a senior writer and podcast host for DRaysBay, where he hosts the “Rays Your Voice” podcast.

Known for his leadership in athletic communications, external operations, and student-athlete engagement, Rutherford brings a well-rounded background in athletics administration, media relations, and organizational operations to TSC Athletics.

Rutherford will return to Tallahassee alongside his fiancée, Edyney.
