Eagle men take top 10 battle vs. ‘Dores

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (February 6, 2021) – In a battle of nationally-ranked men's basketball teams, No. 2 Tallahassee Community College knocked off ninth-ranked Gulf Coast State College, 86-74, on Saturday afternoon in the Eagles' Panhandle Conference opener.

The Eagles are now 6-0 on the season (1-0 PC).

The win was Tallahassee's first over a ranked-team in a true road game since November 27, 2012, when it won at No. 23 Gordon (Ga.) State College, 86-79. It was also the highest-ranked opponent the Eagles have defeated in a true road game since a 61-52 upset at No. 7 Chipola College in the 2011 FCSAA Championship Game.

Gulf Coast State brought a two-game winning streak against the Eagles into Saturday. The Commodores won a triple-overtime thriller in the 2020 regular season finale to punch its ticket to the postseason. Two weeks later, they beat Tallahassee to claim the FCSAA Championship.

Saturday's game favored the Eagles virtually wire-to-wire.

After a close 14 minutes to start the game, Tallahassee closed the first half on a 14-6 run and led 40-29 at the intermission.

The Eagles stretched their lead to 50-35 less than five minutes into the second half and kept the Commodores at bay the rest of the way.

Six players scored in double-figures for Tallahassee, led by Tyler Poindexter's 19.

El Ellis had 16, and Shawn Walker scored 14.

DeAngelo Ware hit 4-of-7 threes and finished with 12. Jeremiah Kendall posted a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Chris Hampton added 10.

Tallahassee will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Chipola College at 7:30 p.m.
