TCC Softball sweeps pair from Santa Fe

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 5, 2013) - Tallahassee Community College swept a doubleheader from Santa Fe College on Tuesday evening at the TCC Softball Complex, winning by the scores of 5-4 and 5-2.

Tallahassee improved to 11-9 with the doubleheader sweep while Santa Fe dropped to 10-9. Both teams were hampered by numerous rainouts in February, including two previous postponements for their meeting in Tallahassee.

In the opener, Tallahassee built a 5-1 lead then held on in the seventh for the one-run victory.

The Eagles got on the board in the first against Santa Fe starter and losing pitcher Ashley Chapman. RBI-singles from Kelly Engwall and Alexis Huss gave Tallahassee a 2-0 lead.

After Santa Fe scored a run in the top of the third, Tallahassee answered in the bottom half, courtesy of Huss, who smacked a two-run homer over the right centerfield fence to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

Santa Fe had an opportunity to get back in the game in the fourth, loading the bases with only one out, but game one starter and winning pitcher Brittany Wright retired the next two batters in order to keep the Eagles' lead at three.

Marina Cobbs' two-out single in the sixth scored Krista Garcia to extend Tallahassee's lead to 5-1. As it turned out, that run proved to be the difference.

In the seventh, Karla Claudio smacked a three-run homer to pull Santa Fe within a run and knocked out Wright in the process.

Krysta Hoani came on to record the final two outs and notch the save.

Hoani was the winning pitcher in the nightcap, won by Tallahassee, 5-2.

Leading 2-1, the Eagles plated three runs in the fourth. Brianna Murillo's two-run homer off Claudio, the game two starter and losing pitcher, gave Tallahassee a 4-1 lead. Brenda Santana made it 5-1 with a two-out, RBI-single.

As it did in game one, Santa Fe made things interesting in its final at-bat, loading the bases with only one out, and again it was Claudio who came to the plate.

This time, she hit a hard grounder up the middle, where the second baseman Garcia made a diving stop to her right and flipped to shortstop Samantha Moore, who recorded the force out at second. A run scored from third but Garcia's defensive gem all but snuffed out the Saints' rally.

The next batter, Megan McDonald, grounded back to the cirlce to end the game.

Ashley Dobson struck out seven in three innings of relief to earn the save.

Ashley Heath-Smith went 2-for-4 in the opener. Engwall and Huss were both 2-for-3. Huss drove in three runs.

In game two, Cobbs and Murillo both went 2-for-4.

Tallahassee will return to action this weekend when it plays a home-and-home with Darton (Ga.) State College. The Eagles will travel to Albany, Ga., on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The teams will play another pair of games at 1 p.m. Sunday at the TCC Softball Complex.
