Fowler, Oakes pitch Eagles to sweep at Andrew

CUTHBERT, Ga. (February 27, 2021) – Behind complete-game efforts from Emma Fowler and Emily Oakes, Tallahassee Community College swept a softball doubleheader from Andrew (Ga.) College on Saturday, winning by the scores of 12-3 and 6-0.

Fowler's win was a five-inning complete game, due to the Eagles' winning via the mercy rule. She allowed only two hits and one walk and all three runs allowed were unearned.

Fowler is now 3-4 on the season.

Oakes (1-2) picked up her first win of 2021 with the three-hit shutout. She struck out three.

In the opener, Tallahassee blitzed Andrew for a nine-run first. All but one run was scored with two outs.

Stacey Hudson singled home Jania Davis for the first run of the game. After moving into scoring position on Raven Little's single, Hudson was thrown out attempting to steal third for the second out of the inning.

The Fighting Tigers, however, didn't get out of the inning until Hudson came to the plate for the second time. In between were seven consecutive hits, capped by Emery Mayne's two-run homer that put the Eagles in front, 9-0.

Esmee Toet's second-inning single scored Little, and Maddy Walther doubled home two runs in the fifth.

Andrew broke up Fowler's shutout bid in the fourth when Brianna Neese cleared the bases with a two-out double.

Davis and Little led the Eagles' 17-hit attack with three each. Walther was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Toet and Jade Castillo also had two hits apiece.

In game two, Tallahassee again jumped on the hosts in its first at-bat, albeit in a less explosive manner.

Davis bunted her way on to lead things off and scored on Mayne's double. Walther's sac-fly plated Mayne and gave Oakes an early two-run cushion.

Andrew had at least one base runner in each inning, including the bottom of the first when Oakes issued two of her six walks, but the Fighting Tigers managed to advance only one runner past second base for the entire game.

The score remained 2-0 into the fourth when Aneyshka Aponte smacked a solo homer with two outs. MacKenzie Childs reached base on an error and scored on Davis' single to increase Tallahassee's lead to 4-0.

Childs singled home Aponte in the sixth and Little scored on Sheshe Ortiz' single in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Davis and Little had two hits each, as the Eagles again reached double-digits in the hit column with 10.

Tallahassee and Andrew will complete a home-and-home with the Fighting Tigers travel to Tallahassee for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
