Lady Eagles Stun No. 2 Northwest Florida in Conference Home Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — JANUARY 10, 2025 - The Tallahassee State women's basketball team delivered a statement win on Saturday night, knocking off No. 2-ranked Northwest Florida State College, 61–59, in a thrilling conference home opener.

The victory marks several historic milestones for the Lady Eagles. It is their first win in a conference home opener in 10 years and the program's first victory over a top-10 ranked opponent in seven years. With the win, Tallahassee State opens conference play at 1–0 and improves to 12–5 overall on the season.

The Eagles trailed by two points at halftime but refused to back down against one of the nation's top teams. Tallahassee State battled possession by possession throughout the second half, showing resilience, toughness, and poise in a tightly contested matchup that came down to the final moments.

Head Coach Chelsea Waters earned her first conference win in her first coached conference game since being named head coach last May. Since taking over the program, Coach Waters has helped spark a turnaround for the Lady Eagles, and Saturday night's performance reflected the competitive edge and belief she has instilled in the team.

Facing a nationally ranked opponent, the Lady Eagles rose to the challenge, delivering a complete team effort highlighted by relentless defense and timely execution down the stretch to secure the massive victory. The Lady Eagles move to 2-1 when facing ranked opponents this season.

Tallahassee State will look to carry the momentum forward as conference play continues Wednesday night in Pensacola as they take on the Pirates at 5:15pm ET.
